Architecting failure-proof flash storage layouts: passive bank verification, cryptographic signature validation, and sub-second rollback during boot failures.
Before any bootloader swaps active flash banks, the vehicle Hardware Security Module (HSM) verifies the RSA-4096 or ECDSA P-384 cryptographic signature of the new kernel and container images. If a single bit in flash memory has flipped due to cosmic radiation or tampering, the bootloader rejects the active bank pointer and remains on the proven working partition.
After booting into the updated bank, the operating system enters a probationary probation window. An isolated hardware watchdog timer begins counting down from 30 seconds. System orchestrators must confirm that critical services (brake telemetry, steering diagnostics, powertrain communication) report healthy status before sending the heartbeat kick. If a kernel panic occurs, the timer expires and the hardware boots the rollback bank within 800 milliseconds.
